Find and add skills
A skill gives a persona reusable instructions for a particular kind of work. Add skills that match its job, then give it a task that uses them.
Know what a skill provides
A skill can explain a workflow, supply a checklist, or include supporting files. It does not connect an account for you. A skill about a task tracker still needs the appropriate integration and permissions when it works with that tracker.
Start with one skill that fills a clear gap. For example, a planning persona might need a review checklist. Adding unrelated skills makes it harder to understand which instructions shape the result.
1. Search from Persona Settings
- Open the persona’s settings.
- Find Skills near the AI provider and persona avatar.
- Choose Search and add skills.
- Search for a task, topic, or skill name.
- Read the result’s description and source before selecting it.
Search covers the available skills.sh, Hermes, OpenClaw, and saved-source entries. Source badges help distinguish similarly named skills. Check the repository or source when the name alone is ambiguous.
2. Add the skill
Choose the matching result to add it. Wait for the save feedback, then check the selected skills beneath the search control. If the page shows a budget or preparation problem, read that message before starting a task.
Use the remove control beside a selected skill when the persona no longer needs it. Removing a skill stops subsequent MCP reads for that persona. It does not delete the upstream repository or recall files a client already downloaded.
Use a specific source
The search window includes Add another way options:
- Hermes taps: add a GitHub repository containing a reusable collection of skills. Choose the skill from that source after it has been indexed.
- Git repository: check a public GitHub repository containing a root
SKILL.md. Enter its repository name or paste a web or SSH URL. Review the skill and exact commit before choosing Add skill. - ClawHub registry: add a public HTTPS registry that allows skills to be read without signing in. Private network addresses are not supported by this option.
Add a public GitHub repository skill
- Open Search and add skills in Persona Settings.
- Enter
acme/reviewor paste a GitHub repository URL into the search field. - Choose Check Git skill or press Enter when that action is highlighted. Typing or pasting does not add the skill.
- Wait for the check. Read the skill name, repository and exact commit in the review.
- Choose Add skill. Check that the skill appears in the persona’s selected skills.
You can also choose Add another way, then Git repository. Enter the same repository reference and choose Check skill to open its review.
These inputs all check the default branch of the same public repository. The git: prefix is optional.
acme/reviewhttps://github.com/acme/reviewhttp://github.com/acme/reviewhttps://github.com/acme/review.gitgit@github.com:acme/review.gitssh://git@github.com/acme/review.git
To choose a branch or tag, use acme/review@main. Branch names such as acme/review@feature/check are supported. URL inputs select the default branch.
Only public GitHub repository roots are supported. SSH URLs identify the repository. They do not sign you in or provide private repository access. Links to individual files, subdirectories and other Git hosts are not supported.
If the check times out, try again. If the repository exceeds the 1 MiB text-file limit, 8 MiB bundle limit or 256-text-file limit, use a smaller repository containing the root SKILL.md and its required text files. Check the error beside the reference field before retrying.
3. Give it a small task
Open chat and ask for a concrete result that fits the skill. Name the skill if you want it used for this task. Check the result and the run’s activity before applying the workflow to a larger project.
The same Skills picker is available for linked HermesAgent and OpenClaw personas. Their selected skills are available through their PersonaStack MCP connection. Their host must support the MCP Skills extension to load them. A saved selection or ready connection does not confirm that the host loaded the skill.
