Set up memory, files, and Dreaming

Personal Memory keeps information the persona can use later. Persistent storage keeps its working files. Dreaming gives it scheduled time to review recent work and organize what it learned.

Before you start

Open the persona’s settings. It needs a usable provider before it can carry out a request to write memory or run a Dreaming task.

1. Enable Personal Memory

  1. Find Personal Memory in Persona Settings.
  2. Turn it on.
  3. Choose PersonaStack Hosted or an available assigned Wiki.js target.
  4. Wait for the save confirmation and check for any availability message.

Choose a location you intend to keep using. If hosted memory is unavailable, follow the message on the page. If your selected Wiki.js connection needs attention, repair it before relying on memory writes.

2. Save something useful

Give the persona a specific fact or preference to remember. Avoid using memory as a substitute for the instructions that define its job.

A useful memory request
Remember this for our website project: the bakery is closed on Mondays, and the owner reviews all menu changes before publication. Save it in a topic for the bakery website.

Open Memory Topics near the top of Persona Settings to inspect saved topics. Choose a topic from the selector and review its contents. If the page shows no topics, ask the persona whether the write succeeded rather than assuming the chat message was stored.

3. Keep working files between runs

New PersonaStack-run personas have Keep Files Between Runs enabled when they are created with an AI provider assigned to a supported hosted or Kubernetes location. Existing personas keep their current storage setting.

If you create a persona without a provider or supported location, storage starts off. Assigning a provider later does not turn it on automatically.

Open Storage and check Keep Files Between Runs. If it is off and you want to keep working files, enable it. Complete any storage fields shown for your location, then choose Save storage. Enabled storage does not mean the disk is ready. Wait for the storage status to be ready before relying on saved files.

Linked external personas use storage on their own host.

This setting keeps files on disk. Personal Memory holds information in memory topics. Turn on the one your task needs, or both when it needs both.

4. Enable Dreaming

The Dreaming panel lists its prerequisites. For a PersonaStack-run persona, these are Prior Run Access, Scheduled Tasks, Personal Memory, and Keep Files Between Runs.

  1. Enable the listed capabilities.
  2. Resolve any memory or storage readiness messages.
  3. Wait for the requirement indicators to show that the persona is ready.
  4. Turn on Enable Dreaming and wait for the save confirmation.

Linked external agents use the requirements shown for their runtime. Their Dreaming panel does not require the PersonaStack storage switch.

Review what happened

Dreaming can review recent activity, curate memory, and create follow-up work. It runs the persona, so provider availability and applicable quotas still matter. Review Run Logs, Memory Topics, and its tasks to see what it actually did.

If Dreaming stays disabled, start with the unmet requirement named in the panel. Repeatedly toggling Dreaming will not repair an unavailable memory target or storage location.
