Connect your first AI provider
Your provider supplies the model your persona uses. Connect it once in your workspace, then choose that saved provider when you create a persona.
Before you start
Have your provider account or API key ready. Use the connection options offered for that provider. You don’t need to paste credentials into chat.
1. Choose a provider
- Open AI Providers in the app sidebar.
- Choose + Add AI Provider.
- Select the provider you want to connect.
- Give the connection a name you’ll recognize later, such as Planning AI. If the page shows Next, use it to continue.
The provider picker includes OpenAI, OpenAI Compatible, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Vultr, Ollama, and OpenRouter. Each setup page asks for the information that provider needs.
2. Connect your account
For OpenAI, choose either Use ChatGPT / Codex subscription or Use OpenAI API key.
- Subscription: follow the sign-in link and code shown on the page. Return to PersonaStack and wait for the connection confirmation.
- API key: enter the key in the provider’s credential field. Requests use that provider account’s billing and limits.
For another provider, follow its credential instructions. Some need an API key; others also need an endpoint or a connection through your own infrastructure.
3. Choose a model
Open the model dropdown after entering the required connection details. It shows a loading message while PersonaStack gets the available models, then fills the same list with options.
Choose a model from that list. Some providers combine the model with a reasoning or thinking setting. You can change the choice later in the provider’s settings.
4. Choose where the agent runs
In AI Agent Location, choose PersonaStack Hosted if it’s available and you want to use hosted execution. Choose your own Kubernetes location when that’s how you intend to run the agent.
Ollama requires your own Kubernetes location. Its location and endpoint are set before model selection. Provider setup may show these steps in a different order depending on the connection you choose.
5. Save the provider
Complete the save or create action shown on the page. OpenAI labels it Save AI Provider. If a subscription connection saves automatically after model selection, continue from the provider directory.
You should now see the saved provider under AI Providers. If it shows a connection problem, open its settings and follow the displayed message before assigning it to a persona.
