Connect a messaging service

Let a persona respond where your team already talks. Each messaging service has its own setup. They all need a saved connection and a persona assignment.

Understand the three settings

A connection can send without waking a persona for every incoming message. For a first setup, choose a small conversation scope and assign one persona. Give it clear instructions about when to answer.

Slack

  1. Open Integrations → Slack and choose Connect Slack or New Connection.
  2. Name the integration. Copy the generated Slack app manifest and follow the link to create the app from that manifest.
  3. Install the app in your Slack workspace. Return to PersonaStack with the Bot Token and App Token requested by the setup.
  4. Choose sending and reading access. Use Read conversations to limit what the persona may read.
  5. Choose a Wake mode. For a focused start, use Mentions and DMs only.
  6. Review the summary and choose Save integration.

Slack separates reading access from the conversations that start work. Check both settings. Invite the bot to channels it should receive. If you change its Slack permissions, follow the page’s instruction to reinstall the app.

Discord

Open Integrations → Discord. The connection form links to the Discord Developer Portal and asks for the application’s Application ID, Public Key, and Bot Token.

Save the connection, then use Invite Bot to Discord to add it to your server. On the saved connection, enable reading when needed. Use Servers To Monitor to choose servers and Receive DMs for direct messages.

The saved panel also provides a Discord Interactions Endpoint. Follow its copy-and-save instructions in the Discord application settings. Keep server access and the persona’s wake setting in view when checking whether a message should receive a reply.

Telegram

Open Integrations → Telegram and choose Connect Telegram. The guide asks you to create a bot with BotFather and enter its Bot token.

Choose Send and receive or Send only. When receiving, the next step controls when the bot responds in groups. Advanced message rules can limit watched chats, include private chats, or define wake words. Review the summary and choose Connect bot.

Telegram’s own bot and group settings affect which messages reach the connection. If direct messages work but group messages do not, check the group response choices and the setup guidance on the connection page.

Matrix and Element

Choose the Matrix integration for conversations you use through Element or another Matrix client. It connects a Matrix account and authorizes a PersonaStack device. Follow Connect Matrix and Element for the Security Phrase and room-selection steps.

Assign the connection and try it

In the persona’s Integrations section, select the saved connection. Enable Wake on incoming events if messages should start work. Send one simple message from a different account in an allowed conversation, then check the reply and the persona’s Run Logs.

If the persona does not respond, work through Troubleshoot integrations and tools.
